Your CV is your Currency

‘Don’t a serial job loser because of your CV’
A bit brutal? Maybe. But here’s what I mean - having pride in your CV should be a given.
It should be more than a list of qualifications and job titles.
A good CV tells the story of where you started, what you learned and what you can bring to the next opportunity.

My story started delivering newspapers at 6am on a Sunday morning. I flipped burgers in my local town. I worked in a pub and had more jobs at university than I can remember.

At the time, the money mattered. Yet, looking back, the experience probably mattered more.
Those jobs taught me how to show up, work hard and deal with all kinds of people.

My A-Levels were very average. Exams were never my strength. I was proud of my degree and especially my dissertation. Committing myself to the reading, thinking and hard work behind a substantial piece of work suited me.
That was an early lesson. Your value is not always revealed by the most obvious results. Sometimes you have to understand where your strengths really lie and learn how to present them properly.

When I entered the job market, my CV became my currency - it revealed the real me, the drive, the experience, the commitment.

In January 2002, I started Sellick Partnership. Over the next 22 years, we built it into a national recruitment firm with 120 people, offices across the country and £100+ million turnover.

That journey was not built on being the strongest exam candidate in the room.
It was built on understanding my strengths, backing them with evidence, reading people and doing the work. It was reflected in my CV.

It also taught me a great deal about how recruitment works and how to stand out in the market. Too many people undersell what they have achieved. Too many send the same CV to job after job, hoping something sticks.
Today generic AI is making applications sound increasingly similar, when the real person should be coming through.

That is exactly why I’ve invested in Hike - to help people stand out and be seen for who they are.
Hike helps you look beyond job titles and qualifications to uncover the experience, personality, character and evidence that make you valuable.

It gives you honest feedback, challenges you positively and helps you present the best of yourself for the role you are considering.
It does not take control away from you. It helps you make better career decisions with greater insight.

And I am not investing from the sidelines.
That is why you will find me out on the streets of Manchester with the Hike team, wearing the T-shirt and handing out leaflets.
I want to speak to job seekers, hear what they are experiencing and help more people discover that there is a better way.
Graduate or experienced professional, your CV is still your currency. Make sure it presents your real value, not masks it.
Hike is simple. It explains. It challenges. It gives you feedback. It gives you control.
Most importantly, it brings out the best of you.
